YouTube just rolled out a feature that gives music artists a way to talk directly to the people who watch them the most. It's called Top Fan Videos, and the idea is simple: you can now share videos that only your most dedicated viewers can see, right inside YouTube.
It's a small addition to YouTube Studio, but it points to something bigger, YouTube wants creators to have more reasons to keep their core audience close between big uploads.
What Top Fan Videos Actually Are
Top Fan Videos are exclusive uploads that only your top fans can watch.
When you upload, you'll now see a new "Top fans" option sitting alongside the usual Public, Private, and Unlisted visibility settings. Pick it, and that video only reaches the viewers YouTube counts as your most engaged.
So who counts as a "top fan"? According to YouTube, the list is recalculated every day based on watch time over the previous 28 days. In other words, it's not a fixed group, it shifts as viewing habits change. The people spending the most time with your content this month are the ones who get access.
It works for both Shorts and long-form videos.
YouTube is nudging creators to treat these as casual, personal content, not polished uploads.
A few directions worth considering:
- Simple vlogs / Day In The Life
- A first look at a project still in progress
- News your core viewers get before anyone else
- Short messages / Shoutouts
- Early access to something you're about to drop publicly
The point isn't production value. It's access. This is content that lives between your public releases and gives your most loyal viewers a reason to feel like insiders.
Once you publish a Top Fan Video, eligible viewers can get special notifications and see it show up in their YouTube Feed. From there they can engage like they would with any other video.
One thing worth knowing: if someone who isn't a top fan gets a link to the video, they still can't watch it. Access is tied to the viewer, not the link, so the exclusivity actually holds.
Before You Dive In
A few things to keep in mind while the feature is still rolling out:
- Top fan status is dynamic, it changes based on recent watch activity, so your audience for these videos won't be static
- Publishing is manual for now, no scheduling yet
- Scheduling support is expected later in Q3
- Access is currently limited to Official Artist Channels
If you're building an active community on YouTube, this is an easy way to reward loyalty and create more personal moments without leaving the platform.
