Instagram Adds Remix Function To Reels

As of March 31st, Instagram has empowered all creators to "remix" public Reels, which adds yet another layer of interactivity to the platform. This new feature is meant to drive fan engagement and boost collaboration across the board, but you can also "remix" your own reels, if you're not feeling particularly social.

While this new "remix" feature is fully available to everyone as of this writing, only Reels published via public accounts after March 31st will be automatically available for remixing. Older reels on public accounts will have to be manually be added to the "remix" pool, if you want friends and fans to be able to react, respond and remix them.

To find out if the Reel you want to "remix" is available for remixing, simply tap the button with three horizontal dots at the bottom right of the screen when you are the Reel watch screen. If the creator has authorized the Reel for remixing, then you will see the option "Remix This Reel".

After you hit the "Remix This Reel" button, the screen will split, and you will see the original Reel on the left side of the screen and the new subject on the right. Once you've framed your subject properly, press and hold the record button underneath the two videos to capture your content. When your recording is done, you will see a new set of icons at the top of the screen.

When you hit the microphone button at the top of the screen, a new "Voiceover" window will pop up. To record a voiceover for your "remix", simply press and hold the red record button. When you're done with your voiceover, hit the mixer button (to the left of the mic button), and a new "Mix Audio" window will pop up. From there, you can adjust the volume of your new voiceover to make it audible over the original audio.

Once you're happy with the audio balance between your voiceover and the original audio. Hit the "Share To" button at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Once you've hit the "Share To" button, you will have the option to change your cover image, add a caption, and tag people, in addition to deciding where your "remix" is syndicated (Reels, Stories, Feed, etc.)
