YouTube Updates: Audio Replies, Google Lens, Side-By-Side Ads and Leaderboards!

YouTube’s rolling out some exciting updates, and we’re here to break them down for you. From new livestream ads to voice replies, Google Lens integration, and livestream leaderboards. Here are 4 features you should know about.

1. Side-by-Side Ads on Livestreams

YouTube just introduced a new ad format called Side-by-Side Ads. These ads appear right next to the livestream, sharing screen space with the video itself. While the ad plays, the stream’s audio is muted, but the visuals continue playing in real time. It keeps the viewer on the stream without pulling them away, while still giving advertisers space to stand out. You should see this feature rolling out across YouTube livestreams in the coming weeks. This feature can be disabled by turning off your automatic mid-roll ads on the live stream (and using manual insertions instead).

2. Audio Replies to Comments

YouTube is expanding its test of audio replies. This lets creators respond to comments with voice messages directly in the app (currently rolling out on Android). You can reply to any comment on your videos using up to 30 seconds of audio. You’ll also be able to preview and re-record before sending. We think this feature will be a great way to connect with your audience on a more personal level.

3. Google Lens Comes to Shorts

YouTube is slowly rolling out Google Lens on the Shorts mobile feed. If you see something interesting in a Short, you can tap the Lens icon, circle part of the video, and get instant search results.

For example, if you spot a dog breed you don’t recognize, just highlight it and Lens will identify it. It’s a fun, AI-powered way to explore more from the content you’re watching.

3. Livestream Leaderboards

YouTube is now testing a feature called Leaderboard. It highlights the top 15 most engaged fans during a livestream, using an XP system that tracks things like chat activity and SuperChat contributions. This makes it way easier for creators like us to see who’s really showing up and supporting the stream. It also gives us a chance to connect more directly with the people who are the most active. Right now, this feature is in early testing and is only rolling out to a small number of channels, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

We’ll keep you posted on future updates. If you have any questions about these changes or anything else YouTube-related, feel free to reach out.
